services, groups & policies

At East Atlanta Counseling Services, we serve children, adolescents, and adults. We provide two main services: Individual Therapy and DBT Groups.

Our clinicians are intensively trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT, by Behavioral Tech. Catherine Moon, LCSW is also trained in EMDR by the EMDR Institute. Julie Justus, LMSW trained in CBCT (Cognitively-Based Compassion Training) as a teacher through the Center for Contemplative Sciences at Emory University.

Individual Therapy is a process where a person creates a one-on-one relationship with a licensed therapist built around safety, trust, confidentiality, and connection. In therapy, you outline goals you want to work on, and the therapist helps you explore how your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and past impact your life and your goals. The goal of therapy is for you to feel completely safe in bringing anything to your therapist so that you can look at yourself most honestly, receive support, skills, and direct feedback to be able to better understand yourself and heal from past wounds.

Group Therapy in a DBT framework is “psychoeducational,” which means it is focused on learning how to better understand and cope with symptoms of mental health issues. DBT group therapy is a small group where members of all different kinds of backgrounds can come together to learn from the skills and one another. Members graduate feeling that they are not alone and are better equipped to understand their emotions, control unwanted behaviors, and are on their way to a “Life Worth Living.”

Our DBT groups are co-ed and for adults. If you are interested in a DBT group, you must first be in individual therapy.

Tuesday Nights from 6:30pm - 7:45pm

This group is co-led by fellow DBT therapist, Karen Cleveland-Ward. It is a 24-week commitment. Each group is $50.

Mondays from 12:00 - 1:00pm

This group is a smaller, more intimate group on Mondays from 12-1pm. Members are welcome to bring their lunches!

Group Sessions

Each weekly DBT group consists of 3-10 clients and two group co-leaders. DBT Group is a psychoeducation group; this means that the focus of the group is on skills learning and application, not processing.

DBT teaches practical skills of mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and walking the middle path.
