Do you ever feel like painful past experiences keep disrupting your present? Do you often feel overwhelmed by your emotions and out of control? Or do you struggle to feel your emotions at all and feel like you have to be in control of everything? I have noticed that no matter our backgrounds, we are all struggling with something, and we can often feel alone in navigating our challenges.

Hi! I am Katie Herzer, and I became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker because I believe you should never have to struggle alone. Working together, we will create an empowering and nonjudgmental space where you can explore your feelings, experiences, and any past trauma. We will work to understand what may be keeping you stuck in difficult emotions or unhelpful patterns, while building skills to help you move through life’s inevitable stressors.

If you have experienced trauma or painful events, I offer Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). This is a powerful tool that helps the nervous system process and release what it has been holding on to so those past experiences no longer feel like they are controlling your present. Instead of just managing the symptoms, EMDR allows us to get to the root of the past wound so you can experience deeper and lasting healing. I have seen how life changing this work can be in reviving a person’s confidence in themselves, and I would be honored to walk alongside you in that process.

If you feel like your emotions are intense, hard to manage, or you have been told you are impulsive, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) can be incredibly helpful. DBT provides practical tools to better understand and regulate emotions, tolerate your distress without making situations worse, and improve relationships. I am always excited to see how these skills can help a person feel more in control of their life.

If you are someone who tends to hide your emotions, feels pressure to be perfect, or often feels disconnected from others, we may use Radically Open DBT (RO DBT). This approach focuses on helping you become more open, flexible, and connected so you can feel more comfortable being yourself and more present in your life and your relationships.

I am also passionate about providing group therapy. Groups can be a helpful addition to your individual work, offering a supportive space to connect with others experiencing similar difficulties. You can learn and grow together as you practice new skills. Reach out to learn what groups I am currently facilitating.

I received my Bachelor’s in Psychology from Georgia College and State University and my Master’s in Social Work from Kennesaw State University. I am trained in Somatic and Attachment Focused EMDR. I am Level 2 trained in RO DBT. I am intensively trained in DBT from Hillside, one of Atlanta’s top DBT facilities, where I worked for four years as an individual, family, and group therapist and was influential in creating the curriculum for both their Day Program and Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program.

If you think we would be a good fit, please reach out to me at Katie@EastAtlantaCounseling.com, 404-969-5378, or book services now. I see clients in Decatur (and in November, Macon as well!) for in-person therapy as well as telehealth.
